Weyburn Beavers Alum Makes History
A former player with the Weyburn Beavers has made history in professional baseball.
Dario Gomez had a tremendous 2024 campaign in the Pioneer Baseball League (PBL), where he became the first player on that circuit to ever record 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in the same season.
The outfielder for the Northern Colorado Owlz produced exactly 30 long balls and 30 swipes in accomplishing the feat during his 88 games played.
Gomez was an offensive force for the Owlz, registering a .345 batting average, a .449 on-base percentage and a .693 slugging percentage. The California native also recorded 105 runs, 98 runs batted in (RBI), and 18 doubles this year.
In an interview with Denver's 9News in June, Gomez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue to pursue his pro baseball dreams.
"When I found out I made the team, I was ecstatic. I couldn’t believe it. I was just very fortunate. I felt very grateful. Every time I get put in that lineup, I’m fortunate," he said.
"It’s fun. I’m known as a fast guy, so it’s a lot easier to run the bases when you’re jogging around them."
Gomez said his ultimate goal is to play in Major League Baseball (MLB).
"That dream is huge I tell ya. I’m working towards it every day. If I get there, which I’m gonna work as hard as I can to get there, then I’m gonna give it everything I’ve got. But I’m just trying to become the best version of myself that I can and that’s good enough for me," he said.
The PBL is an MLB Partner League that runs from May through September each year.
Gomez played in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) for the Weyburn Beavers in 2019. That summer he appeared in 12 games and collected nine hits in 45 at bats. He didn't hit a homer for the Beavers but Gomez did steal five bases.
