Five Questions in the Final Week

The regular season of the Western Canadian Baseball League is into its final week of action.

All 12 WCBL teams will compete on the last day of the season, which takes place on Monday, August 5th.

As the summer collegiate circuit hits the home stretch and gears up for postseason play, here's a look at five questions that have yet to be answered:

1. Who will finish first overall in the standings?

The Sylvan Lake Gulls are the current league leaders with a 38-12 record and a .760 winning percentage. The Okotoks Dawgs, who finished atop the standings last year, and the Lethbridge Bulls are in striking distance, as are the Regina Red Sox.

Sylvan Lake's challengers will need a strong push and some losses from the Gulls to make up ground. If the Lake Boys can hold off the Dawgs, Bulls and Red Sox, it will mark the first time since 2019 that a team other than Okotoks finished first overall in the regular season. With two more wins, the Gulls can also experience their first 40-win season in franchise history.

2. What will the East Division playoff matchups look like?

The Regina Red Sox appear to have a lock on top spot in the East, but who will they face in the opening round of the WCBL playoffs?

Postseason spots have been secured for the Red Sox, Medicine Hat Mavericks, Saskatoon Berries and Moose Jaw Miller Express. Despite punching their tickets, the four squads have yet to determine who they'll face when the games really matter. The Mavs are well-positioned to remain in second place, but the Berries and Millers are duking it out for the third seed.

What happens down the stretch between Saskatoon and Moose Jaw will determine the playoff fates of all four teams.

3. Who will claim the last playoff berth in the West?

The playoff seeding in the West Division is similar to the East in that the matchups have yet to be determined and a lot can change in a week. The Gulls, Dawgs and Bulls are all headed for the postseason, but their spot in the standings is up in the air.

The battle for the fourth and final playoff position in the West features a dogfight between the Brooks Bombers (18-31) and Fort McMurray Giants (19-31). Neither club will have the benefit of the home crowd in their final playoff push. The Bombers final seven games - six of them away from Elks Field - include matchups against the Edmonton Prospects, Lethbridge Bulls, Okotoks Dawgs and Sylvan Lake Gulls. Meanwhile, the Giants have six road games left against the Dawgs, Bulls and Prospects.

4. What WCBL records be broken?

Edits to the Western Canadian Baseball League record book may be in order when the regular season comes to an end.

Kenny Jinks already set a single-game high for strikeouts earlier this summer when the southpaw racked up 18 Ks against the Moose Jaw Miller Express on June 7th at Mitchell Field.

Will more records be broken? The single-season mark for home runs appears safe but will Jordan Phillips, an outfielder with the Mavericks, take down the runs batted in record that was established by Lethbridge slugger Kaleb Warden in 2019. Warden had 66 RBI that season and Phillips is just seven behind that total. If his bat gets hot enough, Phillips could also challenge the hits record (90) that was set by both Tristan Peters and Dawson Tweet. He needs 13 more hits to tie that total.

Another single-season individual record that is within reach is the runs total of 69 that Zach Campbell scored in 2022. Red Sox outfielder Jackson Syring currently has 58 runs. Meanwhile, Cooper Ciesielski of the Sylvan Lake Gulls has 19 doubles and is four shy of the record that was set in 2014.

5. Can Matt Whitney win the pitching triple crown?

Two pitchers in WCBL history have won the pitching triple crown by leading the league in earned run average (ERA), strikeouts and wins. Both were moundsmen with the Regina Red Sox. Michael Batten did it in 2019 and Daniel Jones accomplished the feat in 2012.

Whitney, a lefty with the Fort McMurray Giants, is currently tops with a 2.36 ERA and he is tied for the wins lead with six victories. He sits four Ks back of the 65 strikeouts recorded by Jinks, but the Swift Current 57's hurler left the WCBL to sign a pro deal in the Pioneer Baseball League. It will be a challenge for Whitney to pull off the triple crown, but the achievement is within reach.

There's plenty of intrigue in the final week of the WCBL regular season, both in terms of individual performances and playoff races.

The top four teams in each division qualify for the postseason and the opening round of the playoffs starts on Aug. 7th. All playoff series are best-of-three matchups.
