Gearing up for Playoffs
As the end of the regular season schedule draws near, teams are getting ready to battle it out for Western Canadian baseball supremacy.
The final day of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) regular season - which will see all 12 Alberta and Saskatchewan teams in action - takes place on Monday, Aug. 5th.
From there, it's a quick turnaround for squads that qualify for postseason play.
The WCBL consists of a pair of six-team divisions - the East and the West - and the top four teams on each side advance to the playoffs.
In the East Division standings, the Regina Red Sox, Medicine Hat Mavericks, Saskatoon Berries and Moose Jaw Miller Express have punched their tickets, while the Swift Current 57's and Weyburn Beavers have been eliminated.
In the West Division, the Sylvan Lake Gulls, Okotoks Dawgs and Lethbridge Bulls are moving onto the postseason, while the Brooks Bombers and Fort McMurray Giants battle it out for the final available playoff spot. The Edmonton Prospects are out of contention.
The playoff seeding in both divisions has yet to be locked down.
Postseason play gets underway on Wednesday, Aug. 7th. All playoff series are best-of-three affairs.
The opening round - which is scheduled for Aug. 7-9 - sees divisional clashes between the No. 1 seed and the No. 4 seed, along with matchups between the second-place team and the third-place squad. The tops seeds have home-field advantage and will host games one and three (if necessary).
The teams that advance then fight it out for top spot in the East Division and the best in the West Division. That second round is set for Aug. 11-13.
The WCBL's final series pits the elite team in the East Division versus the finest club in the West Division in a showdown for the Harry Hallis Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the league's championship winner. That series is set to take place from Aug. 15-17.
During the trophy presentation, a postseason MVP award is also given out to the best player in the playoffs.
