New Leader in Power Rankings
The Power Rankings have gone purple.
The Saskatoon Berries have surged to the top of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) standings with a 7-2 record and a plus-43 run differential through their first nine games of the season. That .778 winning percentage boosted the Berries from third spot in the weekly Power Rankings - presented by FortisAlberta - and into first place.
Dropping into second spot are the 5-3 Okotoks Dawgs, who suffered a pair of close weekend losses to the Fort McMurray Giants. The Dawgs have scored more runs (94) than any other team in the league, while also posting the best run differential (+46).
In hot pursuit are the Lethbridge Bulls, who climbed from fourth to third after starting the season with a 6-2 record. The Bulls currently sit atop the West Division standings, but their losses include a 16-0 shutout, courtesy of the Sylvan Lake Gulls, and a 26-1 thumping by the Dawgs.
The biggest riser in the Power Rankings is Sylvan Lake, who jumped from eighth to fourth after recording a .500 mark through their first eight games. The Gulls join the Dawgs as the only two West Division squads with a positive run differential so far this season.
The Moose Jaw Miller Express are holding firm in fifth spot. They're also 4-4 on the campaign and will look to string some wins together moving forward.
In sixth place are the Medicine Hat Mavericks, who sit at 4-5 and are tied in fourth place in the East Division. They moved up one spot from the previous week.
Plummeting five spots are the 4-5 Regina Red Sox, who find themselves in seventh in the Power Rankings. The defending WCBL champs suffered a recent four-game losing streak, including a trio of one-run losses, before they were able to put together a 10-2 triumph over the Swift Current 57's to put a halt to the skid.
Perhaps unfairly, the Giants are down a pair of spots to eighth place. Fort McMurray has three wins and three losses on the year, including two big wins over the Dawgs during weekend play. Their placement in the Power Rankings is more of a reflection of less games played due to a number of postponements during Opening Week.
Another team that may deserve better is Weyburn. The Beavers moved up one position into ninth overall. A recent four-game win streak included victories over the Berries, Miller Express, Red Sox and 57's. Their 4-4 record puts them in a second place tie in the East Division standings and the Beavers have already faced the first-place Berries five times.
Meanwhile, the 2-5 Swift Current 57's fell one spot to 10th and the 2-3 Energy City Cactus remain in 11th in the Power Rankings.
The Brooks Bombers, at 0-5, continue to search for their first victory this season and are in last place in both the WCBL standings and the Power Rankings.
