Millers Moving Up

It's getting tougher to stay on top.

The Okotoks Dawgs have maintained their grip on first place in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) Power Rankings, but the Moose Jaw Miller Express are in hot pursuit after both teams put together recent winning streaks.

The Dawgs have the most wins (15) in the WCBL through their first 21 games of the regular season and they're averaging nearly 12 runs scored per game, having plated a total of 246 runs thus far. Okotoks had a nine-game win streak heading into the weekend before the Lethbridge Bulls tagged them with a pair of losses and the Miller Express handed them a 17-10 defeat at their home ballpark. But the Dawgs rallied for a decisive 10-2 Father's Day victory over Moose Jaw at Seaman Stadium to remain the team to beat. Pacing the offence for the Dawgs are Cal Gates (.521 batting average, .615 on-base percentage, 1.365 OPS, 25 hits, 14 walks, 17 stolen bases); Connor Crowson (.413 batting average, .563 on-base percentage, 1.230 OPS, 26 hits, 23 RBI, 18 walks); Ayden Crouse (seven doubles, four home runs, 22 RBI, nine stolen bases); and Nash Crowell (21 RBI, five home runs, 13 walks). They've also been getting great pitching from Wyatt Sadlier, who has 21 strikeouts and a 1.76 earned run average through 15-plus innings.

Moose Jaw, meanwhile, has rocketed to the top of the East Division standings after the Miller Express experienced an eight-game unbeaten streak ahead of their split in Okotoks. The Millers are now 12-6 this season and have a plus-19 run differential. Hot hitters for Moose Jaw include Chris Franks (26 hits, eight doubles, 25 RBI, eight stolen bases) and Thomas Soto (21 stolen bases, 16 walks, 25 runs), while their top pitchers are Westin Walls (33 strikeouts, 4.41 ERA in 32.2 innings), Jacob Glazener (35 Ks, 4-1 record in 23 innings) and Nathan Pisio (three saves, 3.24 ERA).

Holding tight at third in the Power Rankings - presented by FortisAlberta - are the Lethbridge Bulls, who have a 13-5 record and the top winning percentage (.722) in the league. They have won three games in a row, but their best hitter is on the move. First baseman Carter Claerhout, who is batting .500 with 35 hits and 21 RBI, has signed a professional contract with the Ottawa Titans of the Frontier League. Claerhout was the 2026 NAIA Player of the Year. In the nation's capital, he'll join forces with Jack Kalisky, who was a two-way star with the Bulls in previous seasons.

Bolstered by an 8-2 record over their last 10 games, the Sylvan Lake Gulls moved up one place into fourth. The Gulls, winners of six in a row, now have a plus-48 run differential this season. Maddox Shaver has been lights out for Sylvan Lake. He is batting .396 with a .514 on-base percentage, 1.326 OPS, six homers and eight stolen bases. On the bump, Ryan Kucy (1.17 ERA, 10 Ks, 15.1 innings) and Brayden Stewart (25 strikeouts, 2.84 ERA in 12.2 innings) have been dependable arms for the ball club.

The Saskatoon Berries experienced the biggest drop in the Power Rankings. They fell three spots into fifth. They remain in the hunt for an East Division title, with an 11-6 record and a plus-51 run differential. Big bats on the Berries include Ethan Murdoch (.443 batting average, .500 on-base percentage, 1.114 OPS, 31 hits) and Nash Nichols (14 RBI, 12 runs, five home runs, five stolen bases). Keeping opposing hitters in check for Saskatoon are Michael Sall (2-0, 18 strikeouts, 0.56 ERA in 16 innings) and Jackson Fox (1-0, 19 Ks, 4.50 ERA in 18 innings).

Climbing one place into sixth spot are the Medicine Hat Mavericks, who are 4-6 over their last 10 contests. The Mavs are battling the Weyburn Beavers and Regina Red Sox for third place in the East Division standings. Carter Roth (35 hits, 11 doubles, 22 RBI) and Blake Dale (30 hits, 11 doubles, five home runs, 25 RBI) have been barreling up baseballs for the Mavericks, while Derek Archer (2-1, 27 strikeouts, 2.25 ERA, 24 innings) has been an ace for the southern Alberta squad.

Down one spot are the Weyburn Beavers, who are also 4-6 over their last 10 games. The Beavers should get a boost from the return of veteran infielders Ryan Dauphinee - the all-time franchise hits leader - and Trevor Dale to the roster. Right-handed pitcher Logan Lynch has been excellent for Weyburn, going 3-1 with 15 strikeouts and a 1.88 ERA over 24 innings of work.

The Regina Red Sox, who have a 7-10 record this season, are in eighth place in the Power Rankings. They're getting key contributions from hitters Justin Simard (28 hits, .389 batting average, .457 on-base percentage, 13 runs, 13 RBI, four stolen bases) and Brady Bye (five home runs, 21 RBI, 14 runs, six stolen bases). Kaegan Baker has been a beast on the bump for the Red Sox, going 3-0 with 31 strikeouts and a 0.86 ERA in 21 innings.

Trailing the Red Sox in the rankings are the Fort McMurray Giants, who bumped up one spot into ninth. Fort Mac sits at 6-11 on the year with catcher Nick Sauve leading the offence. He has 11 runs, 14 RBI and five long balls in 36 at bats.

The Energy City Cactus Rats moved down one place into 10th in the Power Rankings, while the Swift Current 57's clawed their way up to 11th place. The 57's have some major power in their lineup. Jake Hiromoto and Keagan Knowler are tied for the WCBL lead in home runs, with seven each. Hiromoto is also on the league leaderboard in several statistical categories, including batting average (.463), on-base percentage (.538), OPS (1.419), hits (31), and RBI (24).

Finishing off our weekly look at the Power Rankings are the Brooks Bombers, who are in last with a 3-14 record this season.
