Top Dawgs
They're locked in.
Midway through the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) season, we've seen plenty of movement in the Power Rankings from week to week, but the Okotoks Dawgs are doing everything they can to stay in first place.
The Dawgs sit atop the Power Rankings - presented by FortisAlberta - for a third straight week and they've stayed there by putting together the best record (20-6) in the WCBL, along with the top winning percentage (.769), most runs scored (300) and a run differential of plus-144 that is second to none. Okotoks in the midst of a six-game win streak.
The 15-5 Lethbridge Bulls moved up one position to second spot, which is also where they sit in the West Division standings, after winning five in a row and going 8-2 over their last 10 games.
Bolstered by a seven-game winning streak, the Saskatoon Berries shot up two places into third overall in the Power Rankings while also claiming first in the East Division. Saskatoon's plus-87 run differential is tops in the East.
Despite going 8-2 over their last 10 games, the Sylvan Lake Gulls haven't been able to gain much ground on the Dawgs or the Bulls, but the 14-8 Lake Boys have a firm hold on third in the West Division. The Gulls remain in fourth in the Power Rankings.
The Moose Jaw Miller Express lost the most ground, falling three spots into fifth place. A pair of recent hard-fought 5-4 victories over the Gulls at Ross Wells Park were offset by bookending losses to the Berries over the last week.
The middle section of the Power Rankings looks the same as last week, with the 10-15 Medicine Hat Mavericks in sixth, the 9-12 Weyburn Beavers in seventh, and the defending WCBL champion Regina Red Sox (8-13) in eighth place.
Gaining ground are the Energy City Cactus Rats, who currently hold the fourth and final West Division playoff spot and have moved up one position into ninth in the Power Rankings.
The Swift Current 57's are also up a spot and hold a 10th-place ranking. Despite sitting in last in the East Division, the 57's have shown signs of improvement recently. They followed up a pair of lopsided losses to the visiting Gulls at Mitchell Field with two big home wins over the Red Sox. Swift Current has a .500 record over their last 10 games.
The Fort McMurray Giants experienced record-breaking crowds over the weekend, but unfortunately could not convert the support at Legacy Dodge Field into wins. The Giants are going through a six-game losing skid and have fallen two places into 11th in the Power Rankings.
Meanwhile, the 4-17 Brooks Bombers sit in last in the WCBL standings and the Power Rankings.
