Vargas Claims Player of Week Nod
Jose Vargas has hit the ground running.
The slugger with the Brooks Bombers arrived in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) in late June and has been a sparkplug for the team, which is in the midst of a four-game win streak.
As a result, the 6-foot-2 first baseman and outfielder from League City, Texas has earned Village Brewery Alberta Player of the Week honours for the week of Monday, June 29th to Sunday, July 5th.
In that time, Vargas scored six runs, collected eight runs batted in (RBI) and launched a pair of home runs. The Lamar University student also punched out two doubles, walked six times and stole two bases.
Other players who were considered for the award include fellow Bomber Jack Swanberg - a moundsman who racked up 10 Ks in five innings while allowing just one hit and no runs during a July 5th start against the Fort McMurray Giants - and Johnboy Rittenhouse of the Sylvan Lake Gulls, who is batting .312 this season.
