Field Set for Bunt Competition

The Sultans of Soft Contact are ready to roll.

Roll it down the baseline, that is.

The field is set for the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) Bunt Competition, which is part of the All-Star Weekend festivities taking place on Saturday, July 18th at NexGen Patch at Cairns Field in Saskatoon.

All 12 WCBL teams will be represented in an event that is a first of its kind for the league.

While each competitor's bunting skills have yet to be put on full display, here's a closer look at the participants:

EAST DIVISION

Gael Salinas, Saskatoon Berries ... The hometown favourite has put bat to ball at a steady rate this season. The native of Guanajuato, Mexico is batting .401 with a .497 on-base percentage through 147 at bats in the WCBL, while scoring 43 runs, cranking out 59 hits, producing 38 RBI and hitting 12 doubles.

Thomas Soto, Moose Jaw Miller Express ... A veteran shortstop in his fourth season with the Millers, Soto leads the circuit in stolen bases, with 36, and he could set a new single-season WCBL mark for swiped bags this year. The Texas infielder has a .355 batting average, .464 on-base percentage, 52 runs, 26 RBI, 13 doubles and 25 walks in 155 at bats this summer.

Nate King, Medicine Hat Mavericks ... Will King be crowned this weekend? Mavs fans certainly hope so. The catcher and corner infielder from Lindsay, Ontario is in his second season with Medicine Hat and he's been a key offensive contributor, posting a .329 batting average in his 82 at bats this year.

Justin Simard, Regina Red Sox ... Simard has been a familiar face at Currie Field for years and he was one of the playoff performers who helped deliver a 2025 WCBL championship to Regina. The Californian will try to show off his soft touch despite having the ability to hit the ball great distances. In his 126 at bats this season, he's batting .381 with a .451 on-base percentage, 23 runs, 18 RBI and six stolen bases.

Lucas Geisler, Swift Current 57's ... The Saskatchewan native will be aiming for the baseline targets after putting up stellar numbers so far this summer. Geisler has a .381 batting average, .451 on-base percentage, 23 runs, 18 RBI and six swiped bags.

Joe Madill, Weyburn Beavers ... A student at Cochise College in Arizona, Madill has 25 runs, 29 hits, 16 RBI, 23 walks five home runs and five steals for the Beavers this season in 118 at bats. You can bet he gives a dam about this competition.

WEST DIVISION

Cal Gates, Okotoks Dawgs ... The speedster from Indiana University does almost anything he can to get on base, including dropping down a well-placed bunt. Gates is among the league leaders in batting average (.429), on-base percentage (.521), OPS (1.114) and stolen bases (25).

Maddox Shaver, Sylvan Lake Gulls ... Can he shave enough off of a pitch to touch chalk but keep it in bounds? That's the test facing Shaver, who has been a standout for Sylvan Lake this year. In 95 at bats, he has a .472 on-base percentage, .326 batting average, 34 runs, 19 RBI, six homers, 18 walks and 14 stolen bases.

Jack Wheatley, Lethbridge Bulls ... The middle infielder from Calgary will look to whisper sweet nothings to bat-bound baseballs as he seeks to compel them towards the targets on Saturday. A Vauxhall Academy graduate, Wheatley is batting .308 with a .423 on-base percentage, 21 runs and five stolen bases this season.

Liam Kirsh, Energy City Cactus Rats ... The Ontario product will use his persuasive skills with the lumber this weekend. The Indiana State University student has a .500 on-base percentage through his first 27 at bats in the WCBL this year.

Maverick McAllister, Brooks Bombers ... The pride of Thrall, Texas will seek to prove that not everything is bigger in Texas, particularly exit velocities. In 140 at bats with the Bombers this summer, McAllister has registered 27 runs, 52 hits, 24 RBI, 10 doubles, 15 stolen bases and three round trippers.

Nick Sauve, Fort McMurray Giants ... Rounding out the bunt competition is the catcher from Fort Mac. The Okanagan College pupil has 19 runs, 21 hits, 22 RBI and eight home runs in 91 WCBL at bats.
